Over 100 people were shot in Chicago over the long Fourth of July weekend. 19 of them were killed, making it the deadliest and most violent weekend this year.
At least 13 children and two Chicago police supervisors were among the injured. Five of the children were shot over the course of nine hours on Sunday evening and early Monday morning.
The weekend statistics for fatal shootings and total shootings are all-time highs for 2021.According to the most recent city data available, 2,019 people have been shot in Chicago this year, a rise of nearly 13 percent from 2020 and a 58 percent increase from 2019.
